Thomas John. Mitchell
The detail in these boats are just amazing , the reflection of the boats in the water looks so real , the seagulls , you can almost hear them when looking at this painting .
One of my favorites ,,,,,but alas.... there is a bit of water damage to the back of the board BUT CANNOT BE SEEN FROM THE FRONT AND DOES NOT AFFECT THE PAINT , NO DISCOLORATION , IT DID HOWEVER MAKE THE BOARD BULGE A BIT .
THERE ARE A FEW SMALL FAINT RUBBINGS ON THE PAINT , SEE PICTURES.
Thomas John Mitchell, born in Rochester, New York in 1875, was known largely in his own community, as a member of the Rochester Art Club and the Geneseeans. The latter was a group of representational landscape painters devoted to regional imagery.
Mitchell had a studio in the old Reynolds Arcade. In addition, he was a member of the Buffalo Society of Artists and the Salmagundi Club. In 1930 Mitchell had a one-man show and during that decade he visited Taos.
Like many artists, he suffered through the Great Depression. Mitchell’s works are to be found in the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester and in that city’s University Club.
additional note:
His work was included in a retrospective exhibition covering paintings and sculpture 1880-1950, September 21, 1980 at the Rochester Memorial Art Gallery.
